BRIEF HISTORY

Kota  Workshop  foundation stone laid  in  1957 and commissioned in 1960. The Workshop was started with 250 Four Wheeler Units per Month and present target is 430 Vehicle Units per Month. The shop has an enclosed area of 427010 M2 with covered area of 59,900 M2.   The Workshop is ISO: 9001:2000 & 14001:2004 certified shop and equipped to undertake POH and ROH of all types of BG wagons  available on  Indian Railways.

The sanctioned man power is sufficient to carry out  430 VUs POH/month with existing product mix of  POH Load of  bogie type Tank Wagons.

3. Main Activities 

  i. POH/ROH OF LPG WAGONS         

A unique feature of Indian Railway

 Kota workshop is the only Workshop nominated to do POH of all  BTPGL/BTPGLN Wagon of  Indian Railways. This work involves  thickness  testing followed by high pressure testing of valve gear as per RDSO’s   instructions.  The shop is well equipped with high sensitive equipments like explosive meter, oxy meter, in order to ensure complete safety of man & material.

 ii. BOXN rehabilitation –The workshop is capable to turn out 21 BOXN wagons per month with complete in-house manufacturing. The target for 07-08 is 30 wagons/month.

 iii. Repair of 4 wheeler Tower wagons –Repair of Tower wagon of WCR undertaken since April 2004.

 iv. RSP Works–Rehabilitation of BOXN wagons, Retro fitment of high Capacity Draft Gear & High tensile Coupler, Retro fitment of air brake stock by high Speed Bogies, Up gradation of BOXNHS, BCNAHS and BOXN/BCN/BCNA wagons from 20.3 t to 22.9 t axle load & Modification of Side bearer assembly of BOXNHS/BCNAHS wagons.

 v. Wheel Repair –The Wheel Shop of this shop caters to all types of BG Wheel sets like –22.9 T BOXN/BLC, RB 16.3 T, 20.3 T. The shop is capable to tackle 2000 wheels per month including de/re-axling, flange welding, etc. Sophisticated CTRBs used on air brake stocks are overhauled by trained staff in dust free controlled environment.     

 4. Special Works –

 i. Innovation/Method Improvement –Maintenance/manufacturing processes are being reviewed continuously like-Rigging device for wagon shunting, Transportation pallet for gas cylinders, Reclamation of Double Cups for CTRB, Manufacturing of items by switching over manual activities (including oxy cutting) on crank press. This has resulted –saving of time & improvement in quality. 

 ii. Human Resource Development – Spot training on various maintenance practices is provided by concerned supervisors to their artisan staff regularly, to make the staff familiar with repair practices and also to ensure proper working practices.   

 iii. Bio Diesel - 670 Jatropha plants have been planted in various locations of  workshop since June-05.  A nursery has been developed from the seeds reclaimed from grown up trees in workshop.

6. Future Plan

Modernisation  

The modernization work costing Rs. 48 Crores has been sanctioned by Rly. Board for the activities like - Improvement in Body Repair & BOX Shop, Manifold System for supply of DA and Oxygen, Structural improvement in Paint Shop, Renovation of Kota Workshop entrance, Cleaning apron for BTPN Wagons, Light structure cleaning shed for wagons, provision of new godown for CBC items in Stores dept,M&P and Electrical items.

 ii. Enhancement of rehabilitation of BOXN wagons.

 iii. Certification of ISO:18001 for health & Safety.

 iv. Repair of BLC wagons for M/s CONCOR, if permitted by Rly Board.
